Relate Deeply, Worship Creatively, Teach Effectively

Though there are many ways of fulfilling the above title, we believe that when we gather together these three aspects of church life are central to our life and worship together

Relating deeply cannot happen at a church service; it can only really happen in smaller groups. At Central Baptist, we value relationships and endeavour to build these together. Without deep relating, our worship is shallow.

Worshiping together can all too easily slip into dead formality. We believe it is our responsibility to live and act creatively as people inspired by the Spirit of God. We live and learn from those who have gone before and mould it to shape what is to come. We have no right to stagnate in our corporate worship together.

It has been said that preaching is a dead activity in a modern world. We do not believe this to be true. Preaching or teaching are moments in time when people hear ‘together’ the Word of God. If its proclamation is boring or incapable of holding people’s attention, that is the fault of the communicator not the scripture. We believe teaching that is effective under the Spirit of God will shape and direct a community of faith. At Central Baptist we work hard to make our preaching effective.

Baptism is the act of using water as a symbol of transformation. In the same way we wash to make ourselves clean, baptism is the symbolic act of washing spiritually. It's a way of saying an old way of life has gone and a new one has come. Yet it's a bit more than that.

Baptism is also the entrance into the life of God's church - not just the local congregation, but rather the community of Christian believers worldwide. It's a public testimony and "seal", if you like, that declares membership, partnership or ownership. It's a spiritual act that moves beyond mere adherence.

Within Christian tradition, baptism is understood and practised in a variety of different ways. For Churches whose history stretches back prior to the 16th century, infant baptism was and remains the norm. Because society was Christian at it's core, parents would baptise their children into the life of the church, however, that baptism wasn't complete until the child went through confirmation in their later years. Confirmation is the act of publicly owning the faith that has been handed to them from their parents. Despite what you may think, there is biblical precedent for it.

Central Baptist has been located in the city of Palmerston North for over 100 years. It has a long history of providing spiritual nurture to Christians of all ages. The church has a strong sense of connecting spirituality with a persons daily life and also a need to connect with the wider needs of the community.

Historically the church was in the centre of town. In 1983 the congregation moved into a new facility on the other side of the square. The old building is now the Abbey Musical Theatre.

Currently the church consists of four distinct yet connected congregations. It supports local and international ministries both financially and with long terms workers and volunteers. At the local level Central Baptist began a community work called Te Aroha Noa in the suburb of Highbury. This social ministry, that began as a small cottage industry in the local community, has grown to become a major social and spiritual provider. Te Aroha Noa provides an Early Childhood Centre, parental support, ongoing adult education and counselling services. In doing so, it has become part of the social glue that keeps many people on their feet.
